Gov. Chris Christie is getting burned – again – over his infamous day at the beach.
Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop mocked the Republican’s family seaside outing in a new campaign commercial released Tuesday and aptly titled “Day at the Beach.”
AP“I’m Steve Fulop and they used to say politics in New Jersey is no day at the beach – until suddenly, it was!” the Democratic incumbent says in the 30-second spot, which cleverly splices in the notorious photo of Christie lounging on a closed Island Beach State Park during a government shutdown in July.
“But instead of more negative politics, this is a way to show you what we’re getting done in Jersey City,” Fulop, 40, adds, as the commercial cuts to shots of him sitting in a blue-striped beach chair while trumpeting his achievements in office.
Christie was skewered by the public after a photographer spotted him and his family at the gubernatorial vacation home sunbathing on the beach, which was closed to the public amid a budget standoff.
Fulop, a former Marine who served in the Iraq war, is seeking reelection in the November race. He unseated longtime incumbent Jerramiah Healy in 2013.
Fulop’s commercial has made its rounds on Twitter, where he wrote to his more than 20,000 followers, “Ha. we considered whether poke fun or not…. But then decided ‘ehh, let’s just do it. It was ridiculous to be on the beach.’”
Fulop’s beef with Christie has been stewing ever since the Democrat took office – and refused to endorse the Republican governor. He claimed the snub led to Christie’s office retaliating by refusing to meet with him – accusations that wove their way into a federal indictment charging Christie cronies in the “Bridgegate” scandal.
Last year, Fulop launched the website, stepdownchris.com, calling for the two-term governor’s resignation over his stumping for President Trump.
The mayor said at the time that Christie “made his priorities clear that time with Donald Trump on the campaign trail is more important than the people of New Jersey.”
