New Jersey teachers and other public workers will have to cough up more money to cover health and pension benefits under an agreement announced last night by Gov. Christie and legislative leaders.

The controversial measure will apply to current workers in addition to future employees.

“What this legislation will do is simply save the pension system for all the retirees,” Christie said.

The pension system is currently underfunded by $54 billion.
