Kennedy Airport controllers lost their wind-measuring equipment in last weekend’s nor’easter, forcing them to resort to phone updates from Weather Service forecasters.

“Wind-measuring equipment just shattered on the field,” a controller advised a pilot on Saturday afternoon in a recording posted on the Web site LiveATC.net.

Controllers rely on the equipment for data about wind speed and direction, which they use to plan flights and advise pilots. The equipment is expected to be fixed today, said FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac.

Gale-force winds and rain on Saturday forced many arriving planes to divert from JFK to other airports, including Newark and Philadelphia.
