Democratic Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon launched her bid for Brooklyn borough president Thursday, positioning herself as a trailblazing candidate who would be the first woman to hold the position– although another likely contender, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s wife Chirlane McCray, could make the same historic claim.

“It’s time for change. It’s time for a woman Borough President in Brooklyn,” Simon said, announcing her run in front of James Madison High School, alma mater of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who grew up in nearby Midwood.

McCray has not made her candidacy for the 2021 election official, but she announced early this year that she’s seriously considering it.

Two local Democratic councilmen, Robert Cornegy Jr. and Antonio Reynoso, are also campaigning for the position.

Simon, who lives in Boerum Hill with her husband, was elected to the Assembly in 2014.
