Four men accused of stealing $5.7 million from Columbia University are claiming that the money just mysteriously “turned up” in their bank accounts — a defense that seems to be going over well with prospective jurors.

When prospective jurors were asked if they would tell if an extra $10,000 mistakenly turned up in their accounts, laughter filled the courtroom. “Given some of the behavior of the banks in recent years, I would be tempted,” one prospective juror admitted.

The trial of George Castro, Walter Stephens Jr., Jeremy Dieudonne and Joseph Pineras, is expected to kick off Thursday.
