Prosecutors say a New York lawmaker took $175,000 in bribes from a hospital executive. The defense insists the arrangement was legitimate.
Jurors heard the opposing views during closing arguments Tuesday at the corruption trial of Assemblyman William Boyland Jr.
The Brooklyn Democrat has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges. It stems from an investigation that resulted in the conviction in September of a hospital executive.
The government alleges Boyland was given a no-show job to do the executive’s bidding in Albany.
Boyland’s attorney told the jury that the hospital kept his client on the payroll to improve community relations.
The jury was expected to begin deliberating later Tuesday.
