Jury selection kicked off Monday in the trial of a Brooklyn man charged with sexually assaulting, beating and strangling jogger Karina Vetrano in a desolate Queens marsh in 2016.

Members of both the victim’s and defendant’s families looked on in Queens Supreme Court as nine jurors were chosen for the trial of Chanel Lewis. Selection continues Tuesday.

Lewis is accused of attacking Vetrano, 30, as she jogged through Howard Beach on Aug. 2, 2016.

Also Monday, Lewis’ defense attorney filed an application for his client to take the witness stand, which prompted prosecutor Brad Leventhal to request that he be allowed to cross-examine Lewis about a bloody jailhouse brawl in which Lewis allegedly attacked another inmate and then tried to cover up the assault.

“The act of concealing evidence goes to his credibility and ability to deceive others,” argued Leventhal.

Judge Michael Aloise denied Leventhal’s motion, but delayed ruling on a second request that Lewis be questioned about his repeated refusal to follow orders while behind bars.
