Disgraced pol Hiram Monserrate’s ex-girlfriend was sentenced Tuesday to three years behind bars for slashing her fiancé with a samurai sword — as the victim promised to marry her one day.
Karla Barba sobbed as she awaited her fate in Queens Supreme Court, where a jury convicted her in January of second-degree assault.
“I love my family … sorry for what happened. I want to be with my family again,” she told Judge Deborah Stevens Modica in a low voice through a Spanish translator. “I miss my daughter, my children.”
The 40-year-old repeatedly sliced her love Franklin Larrea’s arm in a June 2016 dispute at their Jackson Heights home.
Larrea testified that she initially hit him on the head with the sheathed sword but the cover fell off as she whacked him two more times, slashing his forearm and wrist to the bone.
Barba was also convicted of two counts of endangering the welfare of a child as the attack happened in front of Larrea’s son. On Tuesday, the judge imposed an order of protection against Barba for eight years post-release, barring her from contact with her daughter and Larrea’s son.
Larrea was in court on Tuesday but did not speak prior to Barba’s sentencing. Asked whether he still plans on marrying the woman who cut him up, he said, “Yes.”
Barba testified in her own defense, claiming the slashing was “an accident.”
Monserrate, a former state senator and city councilman, was convicted of misdemeanor assault for slashing Barba’s face with broken glass in a 2008 fight. His conviction resulted in his expulsion from the state Senate.
He later served two years in federal prison for misappropriating taxpayer funds while on the council in 2006.
