Police Commissioner Ray Kelly defended NYPD surveillance of Muslims in a speech to Fordham alumni yesterday, saying he will not apologize for his lawful efforts to protect New York.

Reports that undercover cops are doing surveillance on Muslims in mosques, businesses, and universities in both New York and New Jersey have drawn flak.

Critics include civil-rights groups, Muslim leaders, and even NJ Gov. Chris Christie

Kelly avidly defended the NYPD’s anti-terror tactics.

“Some of our methods of intelligence gathering have been the subject of debate and, frankly, misrepresentation,” Kelly said.

“We will not change our methods to satisfy those who would impugn them without understanding them.”
