The Latino leader of the state Assembly yesterday endorsed legislation to lift the cap on charter schools.

Assemblyman Peter Rivera (D-Bronx), head of the 11-member Hispanic Task Force, said he backs a bill that would raise the limit on charter schools statewide from 200 to 460.

Rivera said he went from opponent to supporter because the measure sponsored by Assemblyman Karim Camara (D-Brooklyn) also requires charter schools to enroll a comparable number of English-language learners and special-education students as traditional public schools do.

“I endorse the Camara bill. I would vote for his bill. It addresses the concerns I raised about ELL and special-education students,” Rivera said.

The same bill passed the state Senate last week, 45-15, despite fierce opposition from the teachers unions.

“I’m looking to send a letter to the speaker asking him to revisit the charter school issue,” Rivera said.

He said he is reaching to out to fellow Hispanic lawmakers and wants the entire 107-member Assembly Democratic conference to discuss the Camara charter bill.
