Kobayashi beef settled
Former hot-dog eating king Takeru Kobayashi learned yesterday that no criminal charges will be filed against him if he avoids further run-ins with the law for six months.
Yesterday’s ruling by a Brooklyn judge followed the champion chomper’s July 4 arrest at the Nathan’s Coney Island contest, where he took the stage despite a contract dispute barring his participation.
The charges, which include disorderly conduct and trespassing, will be dropped and his record would eventually be wiped clean under the DA-approved deal.
Kobayashi, nicknamed “the Tsunami,” called the ruling a “nervous victory” since his goal is to be unfettered by restrictive “eating league” contracts.
He admitted that he spent a sleepless night worrying about the outcome of the case. But he repeated, “I do not regret my choice to stand up for what I believe to be right.”
The native of Nagano, Japan, declared himself a “free agent” and said his next stop on the eating circuit would be a pizza contest in Ontario, Canada, later this month.
