A retired NYPD detective wounded 56 years ago in the Korean War was finally awarded a Purple Heart yesterday at West Point.
Randy Jurgensen, 75, was clearing mines with the 187th Airborne on March 23, 1953, when he was struck by shrapnel.
Officials later sent a medal to his mother’s home, but Jurgensen was never formally given the award until yesterday.
“I truly feel honored,” he said. “This medal represents those who served in the ‘forgotten’ war.”
