New York City-area airports faced major delays Sunday as severe weather swept through the area – and the chaos could continue later in the week.
LaGuardia Airport issued a full ground stop halting all arriving flights from late morning into the afternoon after lightning-filled thunderstorms flashed across the skies.
After the ground stop was lifted, air-traffic management operations left arriving flights running about two hours behind schedule, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Meanwhile, at JFK International Airport and New Jersey’s Newark International Airport, departures were halted altogether until about 4 p.m., according to the FAA.
New York City’s morning and early afternoon were filled with rain, large flashes of lightning and huge claps of thunder that shook the streets.
The severe storms are expected to give way to extreme heat this week – with temperatures set to break 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday – before rain and stormy weather return Thursday and stay throughout the weekend.
Sunday’s travel delays were just the latest to rock the New York City area.
Newark International Airport has been dealing with delays for weeks after a shortage of air-traffic controllers left the airport desperate for workers to guide planes safely home.
