A popular 150-foot-high Coney Island landmark is going green.
The Wonder Wheel at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, which is celebrating its 90th birthday this year, is being updated with solar panels on its cars and retrofitted with a lighting system similar to its original.
D.J. Vourderis, grandson of the park’s founder Denos Vourderis and the man behind the project, unveiled the news today during a press conference in which Mayor Bloomberg also announced plans to bring 23 new rides to Coney Island.
“We are introducing the old lighting that used to be on – it will be completely green,” Vourderis said.
In an earlier interview with Charles Denson of the Coney Island History Project, Vourderis outlined how he will do the work.
“Instead of running electricity through the wheel, we are just going to put solar panels on each car with a battery-charge controller and a wireless transmitter, so we can operate the ride on low voltage and new LEED [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] lighting that is going to mimic the exact look it used to have 70 years ago,” Vourderis said.
The lighting will be the Wonder Wheel’s original yellowish amber color.
Vourderis, who got a degree in solar installation before beginning the job, said the batteries being used don’t contain lead, are completely sealed and are safe.
