A whimsical troupe of golden dancing statues that have adorned the exterior of a historic loft building in NoHo for 11 years — in violation of landmarks rules — won’t have to come down from their perch thanks to a ruling yesterday from the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The statues arranged along the fire escape, windows and on the brick exterior of 24 Bond St. are the work of artist Bruce Williams, who lives and works in the loft building that once served as the studio for legendary photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Some of the gold-plated sculptures have been in place since 1997. But last year’s expansion of the historic district meant that the statues — an addition to the building — required approval from the commission, which holds a tight grip on any changes to landmarked buildings.

“This is an artistic neighborhood, and to have these sculptures on the building is an example of the type of work that goes on inside, and it was deemed appropriate,” said commission spokeswoman Lisi de Bourbon after the vote.
