The leader of an infamous 1986 Howard Beach race attack is dead after he committed suicide in his native England, his family confirmed on Tuesday.

The sister of Jon Lester, who served 15 years in prison for the attack that left one man dead, told The New York Times that her brother killed himself after being haunted by “guilt dreams.”

“He suffered from depression due to the fact that he was wrongly convicted,” Jayne Lester told The Times about her brother.

“He really wasn’t a bad person the way they made him out to be.”

During the attack, Lester shouted “Kill the ni—rs!” as they chased 23-year-old Michael Griffith onto the Belt Parkway, where Griffith was fatally struck by a car. One other man was severely beaten.

Lester died on Aug 14. His family claims it was due to a suicide.
