LI beach-bacteria scare
Health officials have issued an advisory against swimming at 47 beaches on Long Island due to elevated bacteria levels caused by heavy rains.
The advisory was issued yesterday and will remain in effect until 9 a.m. today unless testing indicates bacterial numbers persist in excess of state standards.
The county health department says the 47 Suffolk beaches are impacted by nearby storm-water discharges.
The beaches are located within and adjacent to several North Shore embayments.
For the latest information on the affected beaches, the public can call (631) 852-5822.
