A large brush fire that damaged more than 1,000 acres and destroyed three homes on Long Island has been largely contained.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced the progress yesterday afternoon.

Bellone said hundreds of volunteer firefighters prevented a “significant disaster.”
