GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — A Long Island school bus driver, fired for picking up three stranded detectives during a hailstorm last week, has gotten his job back.

The Educational Bus Transportation company on Long Island said Friday that it decided to rehire George Daw following a meeting with union officials.

The bus driver was fired because he violated company policy against picking up strangers while a child was still aboard.

Nassau County police officials had argued the driver should not have faced such sanctions because he was assisting officers. They became stranded when their vehicle got stuck in a large puddle from the storm.

Daw tells The Associated Press that aiding police should not get you fired.

He says he’s grateful to get his job back. But he’s also considering other offers that have arisen amid all the publicity.
