INWOOD, N.Y. — Police say they have arrested a Long Island man who attempted to strangle and set his girlfriend on fire.

Nassau County police arrested the 31-year-old suspect on Tuesday. They say he got into a dispute with his girlfriend after going to her home in Inwood.

Police say he tried to choke her with his hands and then doused her with gasoline and threw a lit cigarette on her after she fled outside.

The victim managed to reach a neighbor who called police. The woman suffered a burn to her foot but did not seek medical attention.

Her boyfriend was charged with attempted arson and attempted murder, among other charges. He was scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead later Tuesday.
