It’s called the “Build a Better Burb” contest.

The Long Island Index is sponsoring a contest to find the best ideas for retrofitting suburban downtowns into innovative and surprising new uses.

The contest offers a $10,000 first prize and $10,000 in additional prizes.

Architects, urban designers, planners, students, visionaries and the general public are invited to compete. Organizers say their ideas could help reshape Long Island, known as America’s “first suburb.”

The Index recently mapped 8,300 acres of vacant parcels across Long Island. It would like to see the best ideas for making use of those parcels.

Finalists will be announced July 6 and the winners will be announced in September.
