BAY SHORE, N.Y — Police on Long Island are investigating the shooting of a teenager who was shot five times as he walked home from his high school night classes.

Suffolk County police say 16-year-old Joel Nieves of Bay Shore was shot in the back at around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was listed in critical condition at Southside Hospital.

Nieves was taking classes at Brentwood High School.

Police say the suspects fled on foot.
