FREEPORT, N.Y. — Police on Long Island say a toddler was wounded when his mother’s boyfriend fired a BB gun at him.

Nassau County police say the 18-year-old man was scheduled to appear in court Friday on charges including assault, weapon possession and endangering the welfare of a child.

Investigators say the man was shooting a BB gun out of a window of a Freeport home while baby-sitting his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son.

They say he then pointed the gun at the child and fired, striking him in the abdomen.

Police say the boy’s mother took him to a hospital after she noticed the wound on Thursday.

The boy has been treated and released.
