FRANKLIN SQUARE, N.Y. — Police have charged a Long Island woman with suffocating a friend’s dog.

Nassau County police arrested 29-year-old Nicole Ottaiano of Franklin Square on an aggravated cruelty to animals charge.

Police say the dog, an 11-year-old Staffordshire terrier, died Monday night.

They say the woman was seen earlier placing hair ties over the snout of one of the owner’s other dogs, a Shepherd mix.

Police say the owner told her to remove them and then left the room. When he returned 20 minutes later, police say, he discovered the terrier not breathing under a blanket.

Ottaiano pleaded not guilty Tuesday at her arraignment. Bail was set at $5,000. She was represented by a lawyer from Legal Aid, which does not comment on pending cases.
