Nearly 100 percent of disability claims filed by retired LIRR workers have been approved — despite oversight measures adopted to monitor the workers’ alleged abuse of the system, according to a new federal audit.

The Government Accountability Office yesterday said it found that, as of April, the federal Railroad Retirement Board had approved 64 of 66 occupational-disability claims.

The RRB last October adopted a five-point oversight plan, including identifying unusual patterns that might suggest questionable claims. Nearly all recent worker claims have been for lower-back problems or other muscular-skeletal injuries.

RRB general counsel Steve Bartholow yesterday was quoted in The New York Times as saying that the board “would not hesitate to enact additional changes to curb any continuing abuses.”
