This ancient railroad is finally getting a digital makeover.

Souped-up iPhones that scan credit cards have replaced those old-fashioned ticket punchers on some Long Island Rail Road trains, part of a new pilot program launched yesterday.

The snazzy phones — which come with a little printer to churn out receipts — will be used on weekday trains running to and from Ronkonkoma and Greenport for the next two months.

Some weekend trains going to and from Montauk will also get the high-tech devices beginning later this month.

Previously, the only way to pay on board a LIRR train was by cash.

“We live in a time that is more and more a cashless society,” said LIRR president Helena Williams. “Our younger customers in particular often don’t carry cash.”

Some onboard purchases are still subject to fees of up to $6.50 a ticket.

The pilot program runs until Oct. 9, at which point the LIRR will decide whether to continue with it or have further testing.
