It was a red-letter day.

The flock was flush with pride yesterday as Pope Benedict XVI elevated their beloved shepherd, Archbishop Timothy Dolan, to cardinal.

“It’s a privilege. He deserves it,” said Alexander Inoa, 29, of The Bronx. “It’s great for the city to have someone appointed to such a high level.”

Floyd Donahue, 79, of New Jersey, gushed, “It’s a great thing for the Catholic Church and for New York!”

Donahue and his wife, Dolly, 76, watched the ceremony on TV at 4:30 a.m., then made the pilgrimage to St. Patrick’s Cathedral for Mass.

Inside St. Patrick’s, about 40 parishioners listened to Father Joseph Tyrell’s morning Mass.

“We need to really pray for those who have been named cardinals. Not everyone can have that honor, but not everyone can have that responsibility. And it is a great responsibility,” Tyrell said.

“What’s the baseball team from St. Louis?” Tyrell said. “Yep, the Cardinals.

“So there you go. It’s like he’s fulfilling his destiny.”
