A respected Long Island surgeon and his wife were killed when the plane he was piloting crashed behind a home in a Boston suburb.
Dr. Michael Graver, 65, and his 52-year-old wife Jodi Cohen were headed to Massachusetts to visit their son, when their four-seater aircraft careened down into a wooded residential area in Woburn at around 11 a.m. Saturday, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said.
The single-engine Columbia Aircraft LC41 had taken off from Republic Airport in Farmingdale at about 9:30 a.m. and crashed just minutes before the Manhasset couple was supposed to land at the Hanscom Field Air Force Base.
Family members said Graver, the chief of adult cardiac surgery at Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital, was a “very experienced pilot.”
“It was a passion and a hobby of his,” David Brody, vice president of cardiovascular surgery for Northwell Health, told The Post on Sunday, adding that Graver had been a pilot for at least 15 years.
“It was something he enjoyed personally and felt like families could enjoy together,” he said.
Authorities don’t know what caused the crash yet but said no foul play was suspected.
Responders found Graver and Cohen, who worked for Douglas Elliman Real Estate, about four miles from the Air Force base. No one on the ground was hurt and no homes in the area were damaged.
The longtime Long Island residents were known for their generosity in the community, Brody said.
Graver was a “very, very experienced surgeon whose patients loved him,” Brody said. “He was a fantastic guy, very much liked by his colleagues, peers and the nursing staff.”
During a recent snowstorm, Graver offered to let other staffers rest at his house close to the hospital instead of having to try to find a way home, Brody said.
Brody described Cohen as a “lovely lady” who was “very kind and very warm.”
The couple’s son, Dr. Adam Graver, is an orthopedic surgeon in Washington state but had been attending a conference in Boston.
The elder Graver had been a “very very proud father” who spoke about his son often, Brody said.
