HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — A New York man is facing murder charges in a 1995 robbery and killing. Police say they were able to match the suspect to a DNA sample from the crime scene.

Paul Sampson was arrested Wednesday at his Hempstead home. He is charged with fatally shooting 60-year-old Vilma Portillo during a robbery in a Westbury parking lot on Sept. 14, 1995. Police say the victim, who worked numerous jobs, was carrying about $4,000.

Nassau County Police Detective Lt. John Azzata said officers tied Sampson to the shooting following a recent re-examination of DNA evidence. He did not elaborate.

Sampson was ordered held without bail at his arraignment on second-degree murder charges Thursday. The name of his lawyer was not immediately known.
