A Long Island TJ Maxx assistant manager was busted for stealing $130,000 worth of items like Michael Kors handbags, Burberry cologne, and Ray-Ban sunglasses from the store where he worked and selling the hot goods from a Brooklyn shop he owned, authorities announced today.

Cornell Poyser, 40, allegedly loaded his van with merchandise from the Oceanside store and drove it to an East Flatbush store he was renting, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney.

“Many people dream of starting their own business, but almost all realize that this takes time, hard work and money for inventory,” said DA Charles Hynes. “[Poyser] found a quicker way. He opened his own store in Brooklyn, “Stefani Boutique,” and stocked it with inventory that he stole from the Oceanside TJ Maxx.”

Poyser was caught after TJ Maxx realized the store’s sales volume was far below inventory. The store assigned their own investigators, who watched store surveillance footage of Poyser putting merchandise in the back of the store and then loading it into his minivan.

TJ Maxx then alerted the Brooklyn DA, and undercover DA investigators walked into Poyser’s Brooklyn store and bought a pair of shoes – that still had a TJ Maxx price sticker for $129.99 attached – for $50.

Poyser was arrested Thursday and with charged grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property and faces 15 years behind bars if he’s convicted, prosecutors said.
