PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y. — Suffolk County police are investigating the drowning of a woman who was aboard a sinking boat in Port Jefferson.

Police say 71-year-old Georgia Johnson, of Patchogue, could not swim, and was not wearing a life jacket. She was fishing when the boat became submerged on Wednesday.

They say Johnson tried to stay afloat on a seat cushion.

She and two other passengers were rescued and brought to shore. Johnson was pronounced dead at a hospital. The others were treated and released.
