Lower East Side shirt fight
If you think hipsters and punks own the Lower East Side, think again.
A T-shirt seller who trademarked the neighborhood’s name is suing two clothing companies for peddling products that allegedly violate his rights.
Robert Lopez’s Manhattan federal suits seek unspecified damages from J.Crew and Aeropostale, along with court-ordered destruction of “any and all infringing materials” bearing his trademark.
In court papers, Lopez, 34, says he’s been marketing garments emblazoned with “Lower East Side” and “LES NYC” since 1999, and registered his trademark with the state in 2007.
Spokeswomen for J.Crew and Aeropostale declined to comment.
