The machete-wielding man who sliced a cop’s hand in Coney Island on Thursday – and was then shot in the leg by the officer – has been slapped with multiple charges while recovering in the hospital, authorities say.
Richard Paris, 57, was holding the 16-inch weapon and a smaller blade when three cops began struggling with him on West 8th Street in the Brooklyn beach town around 1 p.m., police said.
“It was this intense prolonged struggle that one of the officers was sliced on the hand,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell told reporters Thursday. “Fortunately the officer, who was a six-year veteran of the department, is recovering in the hospital.”
The scuffle between Paris and the cops occurred after the suspect jumped out of a parked vehicle with the weapons, police said. He was eventually shot by the injured cop — identified by police sources as Officer John Favale — and taken to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, cops said.
Paris was charged with assault on a police officer, two counts of attempted assault, two counts of menacing a police officer and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

He remained at the hospital Friday morning, cops said.
Favale was released from Coney Island Hospital later Thursday and wheeled out to applause from a large group of fellow officers and dignitaries, including Mayor Eric Adams, who had just arrived back from a trip to Los Angeles.
“I have to commend the actions of these brave officers,” Sewell said.
“I have watched these videos,” the top cop added of surveillance footage from the scene. “While we don’t yet know the motive behind this attack, we certainly know the actions of these officers exemplifies what it means to be a New York City police officer.”
