Morris Katz, the 26-year-old wunderkind lauded as one of the “masterminds” behind Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s successful campaign, spewed hot takes deeply at odds with his outspoken progressive current politics when he was even younger.
The trove of now-deleted posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, show Katz had been far more moderate a half-decade ago, Politico first reported Thursday.
The political adviser had dismissively dissed Mamdani’s hero, socialist Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, as inferior to the moderate slice of white bread Pete Buttigieg.

Katz also praised then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who would eventually take on Mamdani in the 2025 mayoral election, as “competent,” according to the report.
And he appeared to view Bill de Blasio — a progressive whom Mamdani has identified as his favorite living New York City mayor — as a clown.

Katz also praised Mamdani’s future rival Andrew Cuomo, according to a report. William Miller“Not enough attention has been payed (sic) to his incompetence throughout all of this,” he posted in 2020 about de Blasio, according to Politico. “Luckily Cuomo’s been competent enough to help mitigate the damage.”
The Tribeca-born-and-raised Katz now proclaims himself a populist and rose to prominence for his role in shaping Mamdani’s proudly socialist campaign.
He’s since become in high demand among similar lefty, somewhat longshot candidates such as Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, who is running to replace retiring Rep. Nydia Velazquez.
Katz didn’t respond to The Post’s request for comment, but Politico reported he gave a statement arguing his old posts clearly don’t reflect his politics.

“I’m glad a few cherry picked posts of my 20 year old self are providing some entertainment, but I’m proud to have spent the last five years on the front lines of the fight for a Democratic Party that has the courage to stand up to the oligarchy, and against AIPAC.”
