The man accused of gouging out his elderly grandmother’s eyes killed himself inside a Long Island jail, according to reports.

A correction officer at Suffolk County jail discovered 30-year-old Michael Grief’s lifeless body inside his jail cell Friday afternoon, according to Newsday, citing Michael Sharkey, chief deputy sheriff at the facility.

Grief, who was found hanging around 4 p.m., was pronounced dead at Southside Hospital. He was not on suicide watch, Sharkey told the news outlet.

Just two days prior to his death, Grief pleaded not guilty in Suffolk County Supreme Court, where he was indicted on three counts of assault stemming from the Feb. 19 attack.

Prosecutors charged he went into a fit of rage when his 78-year-old grandmother confronted him about overdrawing her bank account by $1,000, according to a Suffolk County district attorney press release from the court appearance.

“His grandmother became fearful and exited the house to seek assistance from a neighbor,” according to the release. “Grief allegedly followed the victim outside, accosted her outside of the neighbor’s house and gouged her eyes with his fingers.”

Grief used so much force that he “caused the globes of her eyes to rupture.”

The septuagenarian underwent surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital, where doctors determined she has “less than 1 percent chance” of regaining her vision, according to the release.
