The Long Island man charged in the murder of his estranged wife allegedly strangled her because she was pregnant and he didn’t want the child, police said Wednesday.

Michael Owen found out this month that 27-year-old nursing student Kelly Owen was pregnant with his child, Nassau County Police Det. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said at a press conference.

The pair had recently been arguing over medical insurance and money issues, said Fitzpatrick.

“He did not want this child. He did not want to give her medical insurance. He had this new relationship he was involved in, and he was in a bad position,” Fitzpatrick told reporters.

The couple were married in 2013 and had a daughter that year.

They separated in March 2018 over financial issues and other matters but continued a “physical and intimate” relationship, said Fitzpatrick.

Kelly, who lived with her parents, brother and 6-year-old daughter in South Farmingdale, was discovered dead in her bed by loved ones inside her home on the afternoon of Jan. 15.

A medical examiner determined that she died of asphyxiation.

Owen, 27, of St. James, was charged with murder in the second degree Tuesday.

He was remanded without bail at his arraignment on Wednesday and a judge ordered him not have contact with his daughter, court records show.

He’s due back in court on Friday.
