RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — Authorities say a man who rescued a child from Long Island Sound disappeared in the water himself.

Police in Riverhead say 35-year-old Edwin Barahona of Bellport was last seen in chest-deep water Friday night, then slipped under the surface.

Rescue crews searched for him Friday night to no avail. Police say the search will resume Saturday morning.

The 10-year-old boy he rescued made it safely to shore.
