A man died inside an elevator shaft at a swank Park Avenue South building Wednesday, officials said.

A 911 caller reported the man at the bottom of the shaft around 12:30 p.m. Rescuers arrived to find the victim dead at the scene, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear whether or not he was a worker and officials are on-scene trying to determine how the horrific accident occurred.

Department of Buildings records show that the building still has an open violation for a problem with the elevator reported in May.
