A creep wielding a heavy metal clamp randomly targeted at least two men in Times Square on Sunday afternoon, leaving one of them needing stitches, according to authorities.
The thug was holding the clamp, which is similar to those that stagehands employ to hang lights, when he struck a 37-year-old Spanish tourist in the face, leaving his nose bloodied, and another guy on the chin, requiring him to get five stitches at Roosevelt Hospital, police said. He also may have swung at a 42-year-old man, cops said.
Police said the suspect, Elier Leon, 42, attacked the men about 3 p.m. around Seventh Avenue and West 51st Street.
When Sgt. Patricio Zevallos and police Officer Michael Caccioppoli tried to arrest Leon, he went berserk, according to a criminal complaint filed in Manhattan Criminal Court.
“I observed a metal clamp on the defendant’s hand,” Caccioppoli says in the complaint. “When I attempted to place the defendant under arrest, he repeatedly flailed his arms and legs.”
The officer then tried to put Leon in the police car with Zevallos, but he continued flailing and kicking, leaving the sergeant with knee and wrist injuries. He was treated at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Leon was charged with two counts of assault with intent to cause serious injury, resisting arrest, and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
