ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Authorities say a man is hospitalized after he jumped out the back of a moving ambulance that was taking him to a Rochester hospital.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says the ambulance was transporting a psychiatric patient from Rochester General Hospital to Strong Memorial Hospital around 11 a.m. Thursday when he jumped out of the vehicle while it traveled on Interstate 590 in suburban Brighton.

At least one car had to swerve around the man as he rolled on the pavement. The southbound lanes were shut down for a time while emergency crews treated the man, whose name isn’t being released.

Information on the man’s condition wasn’t available Friday.

Rural/Metro Ambulance Service says it’s initial investigation found that all proper procedures were followed by its crew.
