A man who was about to be evicted from his Rego Park home jumped to his death Monday after his landlord and city marshals showed up at his door to boot him, authorities said.
The unidentified man was in his fourth-floor Wetherole Street apartment in Queens when the marshals started knocking on his door around 12:45 p.m. to serve an eviction warrant, police said.
That’s when the man leapt from one of the apartment’s windows and landed in the building’s courtyard. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
“City marshals tried to evict him, so he decided to jump,” a police source said.
Tenants can be only evicted after a judge rules in favor of a landlord’s petition for removal, according to city Department of Investigation’s website.
