Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis — Police yesterday arrested a suspect in the armed robbery of US Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.
Police believe Vedel Browne, 28, is the machete-wielding masked man who stole $1,200 after encountering Breyer, his wife, Joanna, and two guests playing cards in the Breyers’ vacation home Feb. 9, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Browne turned himself in over the weekend after seeing his photograph in local media reports, according to police.
“He saw that we were looking for him,” said a police spokesman, Sgt. Cledwyn Jefers.
Browne lives on Nevis, but turned himself in on neighboring St. Kitts.
Jefers said he did not know if the suspect had a prior criminal record.
Browne, who works as a gardener and painter, remained in custody last night pending a bail hearing scheduled for today.
If convicted, Browne could face up to 10 years in prison.
No one was hurt in the robbery.
Breyer, 77, has served on the court since his appointment by President Bill Clinton in 1994.
