A New Jersey man allegedly set fire to his ex-girlfriend’s home while eight people slept inside — and then texted a photo of the burning residence to a pal, officials said.
Patrick Hammond, 34, of Somerville was charged with first-degree attempted murder and aggravated arson for the early Sunday incident, Somerset County Prosecutor Michael Robertson said Monday.
Hammond allegedly started the blaze outside his ex’s Hillsborough home around 12:40 a.m. and sent a picture of the flames to a friend approximately two minutes after the fire was reported, officials said.
The residents inside the home at the time ranged in age from 4 to 64 and all managed to escape without injury after a resident inside noticed that the outside of the home was on fire and alerted everyone else.
But the family’s pets were not so lucky, according to a GoFundMe page set up for the family, identified as the Manfready’s.
According to the page, two cats and a pet fish perished in the fire.
“The family is devastated but thankful that no one was injured,” the GoFundMe page reads.
Hammond was found by responding officers less than a mile from the home, roughly an hour after the blaze was started.
He was taken to the Hillsborough Township Police Department, “where he began to act erratically,” Robertson said.
Hammond was then brought to a nearby hospital for an evaluation before he was charged.
The suspect remains in an area hospital under police guard and will be taken to the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.
Hammond previously threatened to set fire to a truck belonging to a resident of his ex-girlfriend’s house, officials said.
