A man was slashed across the neck during an attempted mugging Friday afternoon in Union Square Park, authorities said.

The victim had just exited the subway station on the south end of the park around 4:30 p.m. when he felt someone grab his backpack from behind, cops said.

The assailant spun the man around and cut him across the neck with a sharp object, according to police.

The two then tumbled to the ground, where they briefly wrestled over the bag before the would-be crook gave up and fled empty-handed, cops said.

The victim, 37, made his way to a nearby CVS pharmacy to examine his wounds, then headed to a local urgent care center after deciding they looked serious.

He ultimately ended up at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

The suspect remained at large early Saturday.
