A man was arrested for trying to bring a gun loaded with 18 hollow-point bullets onto a plane at Newark Airport, authorities said Monday.

Maurice Harmon, 63 of North Hampton, Pa., was en route to Havana, Cuba, when he was arrested at Terminal C around 9:30 a.m. Saturday after an x-ray scan detected the .9mm semiautomatic firearm in his carry-on bag as he went through a security checkpoint, a Port Authority spokesman said.

Harmon was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of a high-capacity magazine.

He remained in police custody and will appear before a judge Thursday.
