NANUET, N.Y. — Police say a 26-year-old man who barricaded himself inside his suburban New York home and fired a rifle during a five-hour standoff with police has surrendered.
Francis Bifulco of Nanuet emerged from the house Thursday night. Police had negotiated with him by cell phone calls and text messages.
Sgt. Glenn Cummings said police fired dozens of pepper spray canisters into the house during the standoff, which began at 4:15 p.m.
Cummings says a family member told police Bifulco was depressed, had a weapon and threatened to take his own life. He says Bifulco fired a single shot from a rifle and at one point told negotiators he intended to shoot his way out of the house.
No charges were immediately filed. Cummings said Bifulco would undergo psychological evaluation.
