NYPD officers rescued a distraught man Thursday morning while threatening to jump to his death off the Manhattan Bridge, police said.

The unidentified man, who was on the Manhattan side of the span over Cherry Street, called 911 around 6:50 a.m. saying he was suicidal – but didn’t want to jump because there were pedestrians below, cops said.

Members of the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit and Aviation Unit managed to locate the man, who was wearing a jacket and green tee-shirt and kept repeating, “I want to jump.”

ESU Det. Robert McGee, reasoned with him, “This is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.”

Officers managed to grab the man and place him in custody. He was transported to the hospital for an evaluation.

The nearly half-hour incident snarled the morning rush-hour on the B, D, Q, N and W lines, which were either rerouted or taken out of service.
