The New York County Democratic Committee is in the red — carrying at least $10,000 of debt, according to the most recent campaign-finance statement updated Wednesday.
The committee amended that report a day after The Post asked why its debt exceeded $118,000, a much higher balance than appeared on state records on Tuesday.
Democratic activists said the shifting numbers raised some alarms.
“The county committee has been a slush fund for these operatives for a long time,” said a former county committee member. “There’s something fishy there.”
But Darrell Paster, the Manhattan Democratic Party’s treasurer said: “There’s no malfeasance here. Nobody trying to hide anything or steal anything,”
Paster blamed “negligence.” He said War Room Consulting submitted late and “incomplete” contributions records.
War Room’s well-connected head Charlie King said, “I will take complete responsibility for that.”
But Dick Dadey, director of Citizens Union said the situation “ does raise eyebrows about how accurate their bookkeeping is.”
He added: “I can understand minor adjustments, but these swings are too large to be understood as simple corrections.”
