ALBANY – Another poll out this morning shows little-known Republican Joseph DioGuardi trailing close behind freshman Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

The Marist College survey found Gillibrand leading the former Westchester congressman 52 to 41 percent among likely voters. While Gillibrand’s support remains above the crucial 50 percent mark, the results suggest neither side can take the race for granted. Gillibrand led 54 to 42 percent when “leaners” were factored in.

“The seat is leaning Gillibrand’s way,” Marist pollster Lee M. Miringoff said. “But the contest remains competitive.”

By comparison, two-term Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer led first-time Republican candidate Jay Townsend 58 to 37 percent.

A series of polls released last week painted conflicting pictures of Gillibrand-DioGuardi race: Rasmussen (49-39), Quinnipiac (48-42) and Siena (51-25).
