ALBANY — Gov. Paterson’s State of the State promotion tour opened on a bizarre note yesterday as he asked New Yorkers to judge him by what he says — not by what he gets done — and accused reform groups of being “drunk with power.”

Facing questions about whether he can accomplish the bold goals laid out in his blunt address Wednesday, Paterson repeatedly bemoaned the media’s “ridiculous” habit of focusing on the governor’s accomplishments after the annual speech.

“One of the problems I think in government and State of State addresses is there’s a scorecard,” Paterson told WCBS Newsradio 88. “We measure the person by how much they pass as opposed to how much is right.”

“I don’t think it’s an issue of what percentage of proposals you pass,” he continued. “It’s: Are you fighting for the things that will make life better for New Yorkers?”
